Tips for keeping cool with Air Conditioning

• Never leave the house and turn off your air conditioner and then come back home and turn it on and expect it to cool the house anytime soon. Instead you can set the temperature up five to ten degrees but not off. Turning it off and then on will only make the A/C work harder to remove the heat, this takes a long time and it will take many hours to cool down the house once again.

• Air filters on your furnace have got to be clean. They should be located near the return air duct adjacent to the air handler or in a return air grill(s). Check your air filter every 30 to 90 days to make sure it is clean and depending on the house you may need to clean the air filter more often especially if you have animals.

• Flip the switch on the thermostat for the fan setting to FAN ON, not AUTO. This will run the indoor fan nonstop. The outside A/C unit will still cycle with a call for cooling from the thermostat. The constant air moving will keep you cooler.

• Make sure that you wash the outside condenser coil once a year. If it's dirty, the A/C will run hot and inefficient.

• You can cut off some vent registers in the rooms on the lower levels of the house where it is cooler and make sure that all the ones on the upper floors where it is warmer are open all the way.

• Make sure your air conditioning condenser is located in a shady spot and has room to dispose of the heated air it removes from your house. Don't crowd it with shrubs or anything else.

• Turn off lights when not in use. Lights produce heat, which makes your air conditioning system work harder (and cost more).

• Keep your blinds closed and curtains drawn specially on the sunny side of your house. Plenty of insulation in the ceiling and walls, air tight storm windows, keep outside doors and openings closed and this will all help your cooling bill.
